Z87 vs Z87+ Safety Glasses: What the Plus Sign Actually Means

Two pairs of safety glasses can both carry the letters Z87 and mean completely different things about what happens to your eyes when something goes wrong. One is rated to survive a small object moving slowly. The other is rated to survive a fragment moving fast enough to matter. The frame might look identical. The label is where the difference actually lives, and on a bay floor or a job site, that's not a small distinction.

What the base Z87 mark actually certifies

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is the standard that governs occupational eye and face protection in the United States. Any lens or frame stamped with the Z87 mark has passed a drop-ball test: a steel ball weighing about half an ounce, dropped from 50 inches, has to hit the lens without breaking, cracking, or dislodging. That's a real test and it screens out flimsy eyewear. It's also a low-mass, low-speed test. It tells you the glasses will survive a dropped tool or a light bump, not a grinder fragment moving at highway speed.

What the plus sign adds

Z87+ means the eyewear cleared two additional tests on top of the basic drop-ball check: a high-mass impact test and a high-velocity impact test. The high-velocity test fires a quarter-inch steel ball at the lens at 150 feet per second, and the lens and frame have to hold. That's the test that matters when the hazard is a chip off a grinding wheel, a fragment off a wire brush, or debris kicked up at speed, which describes most of what actually happens in a tire bay, a fab shop, or on a line crew.

The plus sign isn't a marketing flourish. It's the difference between eyewear tested against a dropped wrench and eyewear tested against a fragment moving at 150 feet per second.

Heat Wave's Skynet carries the Z87.1+ mark for both high-velocity and high-mass impact, in a 54mm lens with a 142mm frame width built for full coverage. Why the difference gets ignored until it shouldn't be

Most people buying safety glasses read "Z87" on the frame, see a checkmark next to "safety glasses" on a supply order, and move on. Nobody stops to ask which version of Z87. That's fine right up until the day a crew is running angle grinders or breaking down wheel weights and the glasses on someone's face were only ever tested against a dropped ball, not a fragment. The mark on the frame won't tell you that difference at a glance. The product listing has to.

This is also why not every ANSI mark on eyewear is even the same family of standard. Heat Wave's Apollo, for instance, is rated to ANSI Z80.3, the standard for general-purpose sunglasses, not Z87 at all. It's 100% UV protective and built for off-road glare, but it isn't occupational eye protection and shouldn't be treated as a substitute for it. When base Z87 is genuinely enough

Not every job needs the high-velocity rating. If the hazard profile is dust, splash, or the occasional dropped part rather than airborne fragments moving fast, base Z87 protection is legitimate and appropriately priced. A warehouse pick line, general indoor shop work, or light assembly doesn't carry the same risk as a grinder station or a tire bay. The mistake isn't buying base Z87 for low-risk work. It's buying base Z87 for high-risk work because nobody checked which version was on the box.

How to check before you order

The listing or the frame itself should say it plainly. Look for "Z87+" or language like "high-velocity impact rated" or "high-mass impact rated" in the specs. If a listing just says "ANSI Z87.1" with no plus and no impact-test language, assume it's base-level unless the manufacturer states otherwise. This matters even more when you're outfitting more than one person. Common questions

Is Z87+ always better than Z87?

For impact resistance, yes, Z87+ eyewear has passed a tougher test than base Z87. Whether you need it depends on the hazard. High-velocity debris (grinding, cutting, line work) calls for Z87+. Lower-risk indoor work can reasonably use base Z87.

Can I tell Z87 from Z87+ just by looking at the glasses?

No. The rating isn't visible in the frame design. It has to be stamped on the lens or temple, or stated in the product listing. Two visually identical frames can carry different ratings depending on lens material and construction.

Does OSHA require Z87+ specifically?

OSHA references ANSI Z87.1 as the general standard for occupational eye protection but doesn't mandate the plus rating across the board. Whether Z87+ is required comes down to your specific hazard assessment, not a blanket rule.

Are all Heat Wave Visual frames Z87+ rated?

No. Most of Heat Wave's core safety line carries the Z87+ mark, but frames like the USA Vise are rated to base Z87, and sunglass-only frames like the Apollo are rated to the separate Z80.3 standard, not Z87 at all. Check the individual listing.

Does a photochromic or tinted lens change the impact rating?

Not on its own. Lens tint and photochromic behavior are separate from impact rating. A photochromic lens can carry the Z87+ mark, as the Future Tech Easy Rider does, but the tint itself isn't what earns the rating; the lens and frame construction is.
