How Employer-Paid Prescription Safety Glasses Programs Work

Technician wearing safety eyewear on the job

An employer-paid prescription safety glasses program lets employees order ANSI Z87.1 safety eyewear, with or without their prescription, from a company ordering portal while the employer covers the cost. The employer approves the frames and sets who is eligible. Employees order and submit a prescription, each pair ships to the employee's home or the work site, and the employer pays by monthly invoice on Net terms or at checkout.

What is an employer-paid prescription safety glasses program?

It is a way to buy safety eyewear one employee at a time without a purchasing department handling every order. Each employer gets its own branded online ordering portal. Only the frames the employer approved appear there, in prescription and non-prescription versions. Employees send a current prescription from any eye doctor, the lab cuts the safety-rated lenses, and side shields are included where required.

The reason employers set one up is 29 CFR 1910.133(a)(3): a worker who wears prescription lenses around eye hazards needs protection that incorporates the prescription or fits over it. A program turns that requirement into an ordering process instead of a one-off purchase for each person.

What does the employer decide before launch?

  • Approved frames and lenses. Which frames appear in the portal, and which lens options are covered, such as anti-fog or outdoor tints.
  • Eligibility. Which roles or locations qualify, how new hires get access, and when someone can reorder.
  • Approvals. Which orders need sign-off, and who receives them.
  • Billing. A monthly invoice to the company, with Net terms available, or payment at checkout.
  • Shipping. To the employee's home, or to the office, shop, or work site.
  • Language. Portals are available in English and Spanish.

How do employees order?

An employee opens the company portal, picks a frame from the approved list, chooses prescription or non-prescription, and submits a current prescription if needed. Virtual try-on on the ordering page checks fit from a phone. Where approval is required, the order goes to the designated administrator by email before it moves forward.

What does the safety manager see?

A safety manager or admin view shows requests and shipments, so the person responsible for PPE can see who has ordered, what is waiting, and what has shipped. Participation reporting can be broken out by location for companies with more than one site.

How to set it up

  1. Approve frames. Choose the ANSI Z87.1 frames and lens options for the work.
  2. Set eligibility. Define who qualifies, new-hire access, replacements, and approvals.
  3. Employees order. Share the portal link. Employees pick a frame and submit a prescription.
  4. Billing. Pay by monthly invoice on Net terms or at checkout, whichever the employer chose.
  5. Shipping. Pairs go to employees' homes or to the site.
  6. Reporting. Track requests and shipments in the admin view.

What should you ask a safety eyewear program vendor?

  • Is every frame on the approved list marked ANSI Z87.1, and where is that shown for each product?
  • Can employees use any eye doctor, or only a network?
  • Can we choose between a monthly invoice and payment at checkout?
  • Can pairs ship to employees' homes as well as to our sites?
  • Is the employee portal available in Spanish?
  • What does the admin view show, and who on our side can see it?
  • How are fit problems and remakes handled?
  • How do new hires and replacements get access after launch?
  • What track record can you show, in numbers you have published?

For the last question, our answer: CHAOSRXOptics has run a national tire retailer's employee program since 2017. It has outfitted more than 10,500 technicians and shipped to more than 1,300 locations in 39 states, and about 1 in 4 employees return for another pair. Data from that program was published in Eyecare Business in 2026.

FAQ

Is the employer billed monthly or at checkout?

The employer chooses one of two methods: a monthly invoice to the company, with Net terms available, or payment at checkout when each order is placed.

Where do the glasses ship?

Do employees need to use a specific eye doctor?

Can the program include workers who do not need a prescription?

Yes. The same portal offers approved non-prescription ANSI Z87.1 safety eyewear.
